Chinese Language Teacher Education Program

About CLTE Program

To meet the high demand of teaching Chinese language in Hawai'i and in the U.S., the College of Education at the University of Hawai'i proudly offers the new Chinese Language Teacher Education program (CLTE). This teacher licensure program will be under the existing Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Secondary Education and brings expertise from the Center for Chinese Studies (CCS, with its Confucius Institute) in the School of Pacific and Asian Studies (SPAS) and the Department of East Asian Languages & Literature (EALL) and Second Language Studies (SLS), both in the College of Languages, Linguistics, and Literature (LLL).


THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION AT UHM:

The College of Education at UHM is ranked among the top graduate schools of education in the nation. It is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and its programs are state approved by the Hawai'i Teachers Standard Board. Its Post- Baccalaureate Certificate in Secondary Education program (PBCSE) is a field-based program of interrelated courses approved by the Hawaii Teachers Standard Board for teacher licensure and meets the accreditation requirements of the American Council on Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTEL) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). In addition, the College of Education is one of the very few colleges in the nation with an established program (est. 1972) to license K-12 Chinese language teachers.


NATIONAL ACCREDITATION:

The College of Education at UHM has been accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) since 2001. National accreditation requires rigorous external review by professionals and performance of a teacher candidates in the program has been thoroughly assessed before being recommended for licensure, and programs have met standards set by the teaching profession at large. Completion of a teacher education program from an accredited program is the ultimate measure of quality to assure the public teacher candidates have been prepared to teach using rigorous national standards that have been designed by the profession.
