Earned a BA or BS degree from a UH Manoa-recognized, accredited four year higher education institution. (Additional course work may be required.)
A 2.75 grade point average, both cumulative and in the specific content area, from all higher education institutions attended. Official transcript needed. Applicants who do not meet the GPA criterion should consult with an academic advisor ASAP.
Completion of a minimum of 40 hours of current (within the past 5 years) group leadership involvement with secondary-aged youth. Such experiences may be completed on either a paid or voluntary basis and is highly recommended to be spanned over at least 2-semesters. One-on-One tutoring does not fulfill this requirement. The minimum field work of 40 hours need to be documented on official letterhead or a form provided by College of Education Office of Student Academic Services.
Demonstration of oral and non-verbal communicative competence through the successful completion of a personal admissions interview(s). The purpose of the interview is to assess fluency of oral communication, interest in teaching, student motivation, and suitability to the profession.
Praxis I test. Must achieve a minimal composite score of 516 in the reading, writing, and mathematics subtests of the PPST with a minimum of 170 in each. Praxis score needs to be sent to the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board and the UHM. International applicants must also achieve a minimum score of 600 in TOEFL as additional testing requirement.
