A Brief Introduction to the Major Subject of Ethnology

Yunnan Unversity Logo Ethnology is one of the most active subjects and of the most fruitful subjects in the light of international academic exchanges either in Yunnan University or throughout the country. Yunnan Province, located in border areas, with a multitude of minority nationalities and abundant resources, is famous for some outstanding scholars, such as Yan Chengzhi , Wu Wenzao, Fei Xiaotong and so on. They ever devoted to the teaching and research of ethnology and minority history and made the noticeable achievements in this field. In 1949's, teachers of Liberal Arts were organized to participate in the investigation regarding the ethnic identification and history of ethnic society, which supplied detailed scientific foundation. In 1995, Teaching and Research Sections of Chinese Nation History were established by History Department and History of Minority Nationalities of China was brought in existence in 1961.To our great enjoyment, History of Minority Nationalities was approved to be the key subject of Yunnan Province. In 1997,Ethnology was listed as the key subject of "211 Project" in the state level. Nowadays, Yunnan University has reaped abundant and excellent fruits in the teaching and research of Ethnology, having trained a group of outstanding and experienced teachers. More than 30 teachers and research workers are devoted to this field, among them above 80% are professors and associate professors; The age of all teachers and research workers are below 60: teachers of below 50 with doctorial or master degree. The young researchers of below 40 account for above 50%. More than 30 students with doctorial degrees and approximate 100 with master degrees have been trained. More than 10 of postgraduates are minority nationalities. About ten thirds of the doctors and postgraduates have been receiving further education abroad. The construction of Ethnology as a key subject is expected to achieve two goals; One is to bring ethnology and its correlated subjects to reach the leading standard both in the level of state and of the world, with its own characteristics. The other is to become a base for research and for the development of the talented men, with advanced education in southwest region, providing the scientific foundation for promotion of the societal stability, national unification, the advancement of the society and economic development. December,1999, a Cross-century Field Investigation was conducted involving 5,000 subjects of 25 minority nationalities in Yunnan University. Over 30 professors, associate professors of more than 10 subjects and 80 students with doctorial, master, bachelor degrees participated in this investigation. The investigation focused on the ethno-ecology, ethnic population, ethnic economy, ethnic society, ethnic politics, ethnic common law, ethnic culture, ethnic education, ethnic science and technology, ethnic religion, ethnic history, genetic information and etc. The participants covered several millions of kilometers and 13 administrative divisions, 23 counties and 25 villages altogether. March, 2000, on the basis of the sorting out of the data, as many as 25 volumes had been accomplished.
